UK: A planning application for a 12-storey aparthotel in Birmingham has been recommended for approval ahead of a planning committee meeting next week.
Soller Group is applying to build the property on land at the corner of Tennant Street and Granville Street.
The site is a 35-space rectangular tarmac car park owned by retailer Lee Longlands.which is seeking to relocate its premises to another site in Birmingham and would like to sell the car park to assist with the relocation strategy and operation of the business.
Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects, the project, known as Lead Works, would comprise an entrance/reception, restaurant/café and gallery lounge on the ground floor mezzanine, with floors one to 11 providing 198 rooms.
A statement lodged on behalf of the applicant with Birmingham City Council said: “The development is shown to be an appropriate design solution for the site, demonstrating high design quality, enhancing local distinctiveness and making efficient use of a brownfield site in an accessible location, with an appropriate mix of dwellings. It ensures the revitalisation of an inner-city location in accordance with policy.”
A report for the committee added: “The redevelopment of this car park site is in accordance with land use planning polices for the area. Notwithstanding some shortfalls in amenity separation standards and the loss of 11 trees, on balance the scheme would provide a well-designed and sustainably located aparthotel, bringing economic public benefits, securing local jobs and regeneration to this part of the city.”
