Ireland: An appeal against a 55-key aparthotel at the Waterways complex in Sallins has been withdrawn.

A number of redevelopment projects at the Waterways complex in Sallins look set to proceed after appeals were withdrawn. The appeals were withdrawn by Springwood Limited, a locally based development company.

Appeals were lodged with the planning appeals board after Kildare County Council (KCC) approved a plan to develop an aparthotel with 55 rooms and a commercial gym in place of a permitted hotel use on the first and second floors.

KCC also approved CWGS Investments Ltd’s plans for a change of use from a permitted creche and community centre/meeting rooms use at ground floor level to office use.

In a submission to Kildare County Council, Springwood claimed it had been obliged to provide additional surface water treatment measures at a nearby housing development at considerable cost to deal with legacy surface water drainage issues at the Waterways. The Waterways was built during the Celtic Tiger era, but much of it remained unopened.

The development was put up for sale in May 2015 and was effectively sold off at the request of the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA). Before that, in 2013, there was a bid to convert the hotel into a nursing home. But this was turned down by Kildare County Council and again on appeal to An Bord Pleanála.
