UK: Plans have been submitted to Coventry City Council to convert a vacant Co-op corner store in St Michael’s into a 24-bed aparthotel.
Located at 18 Corporation Street, the existing Co-op store has sat vacant for two years.
According to planning documents, the site could be transformed into a 24-bedroom aparthotel. The majority of the works will take place at basement level.
Plans call for 24 studio rooms with ensuite bathrooms and kitchenettes, a breakfast room with pantry, a gym, disabled toilets, a laundry room and luggage storage. The ground floor area will host a reception.
A “specialist management company” will operate the site, providing 24 hour access arrangements such as check in/out, cleaning, and waste management.
Documents submitted by Anjum Design read: “Due to the basement floor plan of the building the layout of the hotel accommodation includes internal rooms without windows. This is a far from ideal layout however as this is not a permanent from of residential accommodation, which would require higher levels of amenity, it is considered that the proposal could not be resisted on amenity grounds and is a scenario which is evident in the existing hotels operated by this budget hotel providers elsewhere in country.
“There will be no changes to the external appearance of the building. The intended market for the property use would be for business stays and leisure city breaks.”
Coventry City Council is yet to make a decision on the aparthotel application.
