UK: Architecture studio Polysmiths has revealed the design details for a Georgian townhouse conversion in Bloomsbury, London, into a 12-room aparthotel.

The property was previously operated as a bed and breakfast and features a disused rear garden and storage.

Design plans include transforming the B&B into 12 suites available for short and long-term stays. Each room will provide a small kitchenette.

The ground floor flexible area will include a reception, a small cafe bar, as well as working and meeting space. A new glazed door will connect the ground level with the rear courtyard garden cafe to create an indoor-outdoor living and dining space.

The design statement read: “The project opts for using recycled glass, cork insulation, and recycled softwood Valchromat as key materials with high level of building performance. The rooms will achieve a higher level of insulation and soundproofing, and the walls will be durable yet soft to the touch.

“The incorporation of active sustainable technologies (PV panels and heat-pumps) is essential. However, architects must first look at passive designs to achieve buildings that are more efficient and comfortable.”

Polysmiths is currently preparing the listed building consent with full planning ready for submission to Camden Council in September 2023.
