UK: Plans for a £60 million hotel and apartment development on Gateshead quayside are expected to be approved this week.
The site on the corner of Mill Road and Hawks Road was originally set to become home to a 20-storey apartment block when plans were approved last October, but those designs have been shelved in favour of a bigger scheme – a high-rise hotel and apartment tower – to serve the emerging arena and leisure development.
Developer Hawks Mill Student Developments Limited is seeking permission to build a 202-bedroom hotel, 244 apartments and a rooftop garden with views over Gateshead and Newcastle.
The plans are set to be decided by Gateshead Council’s planning committee on Wednesday. Planners have recommended approval for the scheme.
A report to council said: “A major priority for the council is the creation of employment and training opportunities, especially apprenticeships for local people and as such the council seeks to work with potential developers to bring forward opportunities in construction, landscaping and ancillary trades.”
The design of the scheme takes inspiration from New York’s Flat Iron Building and will also include two ground floor commercial units.
