Malta: One of Malta’s longest running construction projects has been approved to undergo redevelopment this past week.
The Grand Hotel Verdala in the Maltese town of Rabat is set to be redeveloped as a modern 5-star luxury hotel.
The property was originally opened in 1971 and served as a premium hotel on the island’s Tal-Virtu heights. The hotel was sold in 1994 to a new developer who has been attempting to negotiate planning approval due to concerns about the local environment ever since.
The current proposal set for discussion by the planning authority board is the first step for full redevelopment and will confirm the original property’s demolition. The process will also outline necessary steps to ensure that any construction will not damage a nearby archaeological site.
The case officer at the Environment and Resources Authority said to Malta Independent: “Although the proposal involves the redevelopment of a site and thus, the proposal is to be considered with respect the scheme, the Planning Directorate considered previous commitments on site. Whilst the validity of a previous 1994 application may be argued, it is noted that the land, including areas outside development zone, has long been considered and committed for hotel development.”
The new development will include both traditional hotel, aparthotel and serviced apartment features. The group also plans to add spa and gym facilities to fit in with a nearby residential district.
In spite of pandemic related slowdowns, the industry is continuing to progress. Most recently a Sydney aparthotel went up for sale for $40 million.</p
