UK: Plans submitted by Belgravia Investment Group to transform a Grade II-listed building in Newcastle city centre into an aparthotel has been given the green light.

The three-storey building at 1 Old Eldon Square is currently empty. The planning proposal calls for 13 aparthotels along with a cafe/restaurant with outdoor seating.

Original features of the building will be retained in the development, including fireplaces, cornices, and some fixtures and fittings will be refashioned.

Sean Hedley, managing director of Hedley Planning Services, who secured planning consent from Newcastle City Council, said: “This is an exciting regeneration investment that will bring an important historic location back to life. The serviced rooms and studios will deliver a much-needed style of flexible visitor accommodation. In Newcastle city centre a demand exists for alternative visitor accommodation to a non-distinct hotel room.

“As planners, we want to see the creation and successful delivery of heritage projects that leave a long-lasting legacy,” he continued. “In achieving this, we are able to make a valuable contribution to clients’ plans and design ambitions, reducing the likelihood of objections on heritage grounds and in doing so, helping to transform our listed buildings and historic properties for generations to come.”

Previous occupiers of 1 Old Eldon Square, House of Savannah, had used the first floor as a salon and the upper floors as a beauty spa. The company moved out a number of years ago.
