UK: Sandringham Care Home, in Southend-on-Sea, is set to be converted into serviced apartments.

Applicant TWL Property Developments Ltd has been given the green light to transform the 20-bed Sandringham Care Home on Westcliff Avenue into 13 serviced apartments.

RD Architecture submitted the design proposal which states that the site is currently vacant. External alterations include the addition of Juliette balconies to the rear, extending the roof to include loft accommodation, providing four car parking spaces, and more.

The apartments will be fully self-contained featuring a kitchen, dining area and clothes washing facilities. The units will be let for longer periods to professionals working in the area.

The design statement read: “The original building was purpose built as a hotel called the Sandringham Hotel, therefore the proposed use will be reinstating the original nature of the building.

“Serviced accommodation appears a natural evolution to the traditional B&Bs and hotels which Southend has many of – some dilapidated, and in most instances already being used for other proposes such as emergency/temporary council housing, social housing etc.

“The proposal has been designed to be sympathetic to all existing materials, styles and surroundings, and where possible to improve the existing building and preserve and respect the conservation area and the architecture of the building and its neighbouring terrace buildings.”
