UK: Property owner Kass Ventures Ltd has been granted permission by Stirling Council to convert Snowdon House on Spittal Street into an aparthotel.
The C-listed building was most recently used as a residential school for girls. It was originally constructed in 1855 and has undergone a series of extensions over the years.
Kass Ventures intends to change its use from a school to an aparthotel with a new free-standing building to the rear to increase the volume of accommodation.
The proposal stated: “The new build aparthotel will be a two-storey building with hipped roof and pitched roof elements. It will be finished with stone and coloured render walling, with a slate roof, timber fenestrations and aluminium rain water goods.”
Stirling Council’s planning and regulation panel considered the application complied with the Stirling Local Development Plan 2018 and National Planning Framework 4 as the site is in a central location, suitable for tourism development.
It also ruled the new extension does not negatively impact on the character of the city centre conservation area or the city wall, above which it will sit.
Kass has been given the green light to move forwards with the development, though subject to conditions. The council requires the new building to keep with the character of the local conservation area, as well as include alterations for vehicle access, new parking and landscaping.
According to the council website, the project marks the first aparthotel in Stirling.
