Tralee aparthotel

Ireland: Plans have been lodged with Kerry County Council to convert the former Caball’s toyshop and Kerry Bookshop in Tralee into a 24-bed aparthotel.

The adjoining businesses, located at 9-12 Bridge Street, have been closed for a number of years. The owner of the buildings John McElligott is seeking planning permission to convert the properties in Tralee town centre into a 24-bed aparthotel.

Areas to the rear of the site will need to be demolished to allow for an extension and renovation of the existing buildings. Plans also call for one retail unit on the ground floor.

The design statement has been prepared by Suzanne Keane MRIAI on behalf of Sugrue Design. Documents read: “The four main buildings, 9-10, 11 and 12 are significant structures, all surviving from the early to
mid-1800s. While the ground floor of all of these buildings has changed dramatically, the outline
of the living accommodation above them all remains in place.

“Our proposal is to restore the historic street façade of these buildings on Bridge Street, creating a contemporary accommodation space in the heart of Tralee with quirky features telling the story of the building through more than two centuries, while ensuring the survival of these landmark buildings for future generations.”

A decision by Kerry County Council is expected by 9 October 2024.
