Worldwide: Serviced apartment agent SilverDoor has reported an increase in demand from corporate travel and relocation clients for carbon emission data, following the launch of its carbon calculator in November 2023.
According to SilverDoor, the tool – which now provides emissions data for more than 20,000 serviced apartment units in 27 countries – has seen widespread uptake among global clients planning to incorporate sustainability metrics into future travel programmes.
Clients are increasingly prioritising accommodation providers that can deliver measurable carbon emissions reporting as part of Scope 3 disclosures and broader environmental goals.
In response, SilverDoor has expanded the functionality of its carbon calculator to support detailed analysis and reporting, enabling clients to benchmark stays against hotel industry averages and model the potential emissions savings of alternative booking strategies.
The platform allows users to assess carbon emissions by apartment type, region, and booking volume. Clients can view comparative data against hotel stays using figures from the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index, and explore practical scenarios such as the potential savings from switching to shared apartment units.
The reporting dashboard also breaks down emissions by period and geography, supporting planning across multiple business functions.
Further developments include highlighting properties that use 100 per cent renewable energy or produce less than one kilogram of CO2e per night. These listings require supporting documentation from property partners, such as renewable energy certificates. Upcoming features in development will allow users to sort and filter search results by total emissions and set carbon budgets.
Alex Neale, chief supply officer at SilverDoor, said: “Since launching the carbon calculator, it has undergone significant development, both from partners inputting data and growing demand and adoption from clients requesting to use it to inform current and future carbon travel budgets as part of their wider travel programmes.
“The need to understand the environmental impact of operations and report across legislated directives is accelerating at pace and tools such as our carbon calculator are increasingly becoming critical to the business function. We want to ensure it is fully qualified and fit for purpose to provide clients with a more accurate overview of the carbon emissions of a stay and report in a meaningful and relevant way,” he added.
Siân Ellis, sustainable procurement lead at EY, said: “Unquestionably, we are prioritising carbon emissions and sustainability data as a core function of our wider travel programme and business operations planning and reporting. It’s now part of our goal to increase engagement with suppliers who are able to provide emissions data to support our own Scope 3 reporting.”
