UK: Plans have been submitted to Plymouth County Council for an aparthotel in a building being used as a community climate crisis hub.
The three storey 42 key aparthotel would be at 67 New George Street in the city centre.
The plans, which have been submitted by applicant RV Capital Ltd, include a ground-floor retail unit and a two storey extension at the back of the current property.
Once a Waterstones, the current building is being used as a collaborative community space in support of the city’s Net Zero 2030 goals. The Climate Hub, which opened in April this year, is a not for profit social enterprise dedicated to creating welcoming collaborative spaces that engage, educate, and empower communities to respond to the climate crisis.
The aparthotel planning application states: “The proposals make effective use of land, securing the optimum viable use of the site, while providing a notable contribution towards choice and overall supply of the visitor accommodation, delivering a significant economic and environmental benefit. Long term the proposals will result in the preservation of the property, enabling the building to continue to contribute positively towards the city centre.”
Two of the 42 apartments would be accessible. No parking provision has been included in the plans but there are car parks nearby including to the rear of the building.
A pre-application for the conversion and extension of the site for a 25-key aparthotel was withdrawn in 2021.
