UK: Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at The Light building in Manchester’s Northern Quarter this afternoon.

The property, which was acquired by SuperCity Aparthotels in November, is a mixed-use development of 172 apartments, 62 of which are operated as The Light Aparthotel. The remaining units are leasehold residential apartments. It is understood the fire started in one of the residential units, not the aparthotel.

According to local news reports, several floors appear to have been affected by flames and smoke, and 12 fire engines were called to the property on Joiner Street.

A witness at the scene told the BBC: “The fire has now been doused. A big hose on some kind of crane got it under control. The crowd has been applauding the firefighters as they are doing a heroic job.”

Local MP Lucy Powell tweeted: “The council will ensure that anyone evacuated will have somewhere to stay. All fire and response procedures have kicked in. Again, please stay away from area to allow services access.”

According to fire service sources, three apartments have been damaged as well as a section of the exterior of the building. One person has been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.</p
