UK: Plans have been submitted to convert a County Durham pub into a 19-bed aparthotel

Developer Paul Million at Vurv Ltd and Cellar Door Architecture has put forward plans for a three storey extension at the rear of the property in Barnard Castle.

The aparthotel will feature 14 studio apartments over three floors and five one bedroom apartments. There will be parking and charging for electric vehicles as well as bike lockers.

The Beaconsfield, a double-fronted Victorian building originally built in 1878, has been vacant since closing as a restaurant and bar last year.

Michael Chou, director of Cellar Door Architecture said: “We received an exceptionally supportive pre-app response and have been delighted with the strength of local support. Using our experience of delivering high end hospitality projects in Manchester and London, we have designed an elegant scheme that introduces the aparthotel product to Barnard Castle.”

Chou added: “We are receiving more and more enquiries for aparthotels and have three further schemes coming on stream in Newcastle and North Yorkshire.”

Other recent Durham developments include Daniel Craig Residential’s multi-million pound refurb of Durham County Club, which saw the creation of 12 serviced apartments in 2019.
