UK: Carbon neutral aparthotel group Beyond has revealed the work behind its new concept room for 2023.
Working with the team at award-winning Perkins&Will, which according to its website aims to design places that make a positive difference in the world, the ‘Sustainable Wellness’ Aparthotel room of the future will follow Beyond’s guiding principles to create a functional, comfortable and modern space (FCM).
The ideas behind the new concept means if something does not provide a functional solution or add comfort to a guest in a modern way – it does not go into a Beyond room. Beyond says “you won’t find throws, scatter cushions, vases, magazines, multiple pieces of artwork etc in these new rooms.”
James Fry, founder Beyond Aparthotels said: “This is how we get a room as low impact as possible – for the guest and for the staff who are cleaning the rooms.”
Beyond is aiming to give the guest less clutter and more space, looking at each part of the room to help it perform for the guest in the most positive way. And by using materials and cleaning products which are sustainable and low impact Fry explains how the 2023 concept will offer “a sustainable wellness concept, which is not only lower impact but better for our staff and our guests – it’s common sense. People will search out suppliers and look out for lower impact solutions – which we offer – but if we can also have the wellness aspect to it, so your colleagues and your family benefit from staying with us – then at least there will be the option to choose Beyond.”
Working with the design team at Perkins&Wills, Beyond aims to provide a room, which follows the following principles:
90 per cent circular materials
As close to zero in toxicity as possible (zero is unfortunately impossible) – This includes zero VOC’s in paints (Beyond uses breathable limewash paints) and furniture, natural materials used through-out, filtered air and zero chemicals in anything from pots and pans to dishwasher tablets and shampoo.
To measure and report its total carbon impact from manufacture, delivery and installation – with the aim of being at least 70 per cent lower than the mean, with the remaining being off-set.
Reduction in operational energy use – water saving measures, low energy equipment throughout, BMS (building management system) to manage, monitor and measure heating and cooling.
Beyond is aiming for this new room concept, as well as continuing its energy generation on site and 100 per cent renewable energy commitment, zero use of chemicals in operation (for cleaning and washing linen) and move towards zero operational waste. Fry adds: “People look and say what is in it for me today and what do I get out of these values and beliefs, and the best brands do this – Beyond does this.”
Last year Beyond revealed its plans for aparthotels in York and Harrogate.
