UK: The Flexistay Reading West Aparthotel could be converted in to 20 residential apartments, with a further 20 built alongside it if a recent planning application is successful.

During the pandemic, homeless people have been provided with temporary accommodation at the aparthotel in Bath Road, Padworth.

The plans state: “The proposal is for a 100 per cent affordable housing scheme consisting of 40 new flats providing stability for low income or vulnerable families in the area. This will provide economic security and other benefits for those struggling to meet day to day needs due to high rental costs.”

According to the plans, there will be one-, two- and three-bedroom units, communal gardens and a total of 50 car parking spaces.

The units will be spread over three floors but will be in “stacked modular blocks” that are “designed to look like a cluster of smaller buildings rather than one large building”.

If approved, the new homes will be rented out and maintained by RentPlus, which offers affordable leases that allow tenants to save for a deposit for a house.

West Berkshire Council is due to make a decision on the planning application in March.
