Australia: Construction has started on an 84-room Quest apartment hotel in Canberra’s city centre.

The AUS$15 million project is being developed by Sandran Property Group, in a building which was once home to the federal Customs department. It will be the second Quest apartment hotel in Canberra.

The hotel, on City Walk near the bus interchange, is expected to open in late 2019.

Quest general manager James Shields said Canberra was “bustling” with government workers, conventions and corporate meeting, making it an ideal place to expand the business.

“The public sector generates a significant proportion of economic output and contributes to a sizeable proportion of travel, with over 30 per cent of trips generated being for business travel,” Shields said.

One and two-bedroom apartments and studios will be built, with the ground floor used for a reception and lobby. The existing mezzanine will be reconstructed with a new entrance and stairwell for a business lounge and conference facilities. There will also be on-site parking and a gym.
