UK: Newcastle developer the Malhotra Group has revealed plans for a luxury aparthotel in a prominent Newcastle city centre building.

The leisure, care and property group, based in Newcastle, has acquired 1 Mosely Street in Newcastle, the current HQ of the GMB union.

In a move to complement its nearby Grey Street Hotel, the group plans to invest £7 million converting the building in to 23 one- and two-bedroom apartments, three bars and a retail unit.

A large empty void between the building’s Pilgrim Street wall and the neighbouring property could also be filled with a glass capsule lift which guests can use to reach the rooftop gardens and bar, which will have views across the city.

Around 25 jobs will be created through the scheme’s construction and a further 25 employees will be needed once the hotel opens.

Chairman Meenu Malhotra said: “This will be the first part of the regeneration of that area and the directors are all very excited and raring to go on this project. The apartments will complement our Grey Street Hotel and the company is determined to save all the historic features of the building, including a grand staircase leading to the boutique and the members’ club.

“The company is delighted to have got this opportunity to bring this iconic corner block back into full use, and give it another lease of life. The GMB has occupied the building for a long time and maintained it well but we want to give it a new life with a very different use which will attract guests from across the North East and beyond. As a company Malhotra Group feels it is very important to save such beautiful buildings within the city, and are very grateful to the city council and to English Heritage for how they have supported this project which will bring this part of Newcastle back to life. This development is not only going to be a leader in its segment because we take pride in whatever we do,” he added.

Earlier this year the company acquired 42-50 Grey Street, which it is transforming into its new headquarters.
