Australia: Developer Meriton has changed plans for its Sussex Street mixed-use project in the Sydney CBD for a second time, this time from hotels to serviced apartments.
Meriton first lodged plans to build an apartment and hotel tower at 230-234 Sussex Street, adjacent to the heritage-listed Foley Brothers warehouse at 230 Sussex Street, in early 2017 and received approval in May that year.
It planned to build a 32-level tower on the corner site comprising serviced apartments and 102 private apartments on the upper levels of the tower.
In April this year, the developer went back to the City of Sydney council to convert the tower into a pure hotel development eliminating all apartments. It received approval in September.
Last week, it reapplied to council to turn the earlier 102 apartments into serviced apartments on levels 17 to 32.
The tower will now consist of 202 hotel suites and 102 serviced apartments. The retail space provision and total gross floor area remain unchanged.
The development marks a return to the Sydney CBD for Meriton after a five-year gap – the last project it completed being the Campbell Street serviced apartments in Haymarket in September 2011.
