UK: A £10 million scheme for an aparthotel near York’s riverside was approved by 11 votes to three this week by City of York Council’s planning committee.

The 97-bedroom, four-storey Roomzzz aoarthotel will be built in Terry Avenue, downstream of Skeldergate Bridge.

The planning application for the scheme was amended after the Environment Agency raised concerns about flooding risks from the nearby River Ouse.

Cllr Denise Craghill said the building would be a ‘huge overdevelopment’ of the riverside walk but Cllr Ann Reid said it was an industrial site which already had permission for offices.

Paul Manku, of Roomzzz parent company Park Lane Properties, said the company had been in talks with the agency and will make a financial contribution towards a scheme to improve a flood wall and flood storage area.

The height of the building is set to be reduced by one storey to meet concerns about its scale, and it will now also have a pitched roof to ensure it will be in keeping with the area.
