UK: Liverpool-based serviced apartment and hotel operator Signature Living is looking to buy and convert the Coal Exchange building in Cardiff.
Signature Living is finalising an evaluation towards acquiring the building, with plans to convert the historic building in to a boutique hotel and apartments. Plans also include a restaurant and for it to be a wedding venue.
The 140,000 square foot building was previously owned by Macob Exchange which had plans for a £20 million scheme to turn it into apartments, restaurants and office space. However, the business went into liquidation.
Signature Living‘s Lawrence Kenwright said: “This magnificent building is a grade two listed building and was once home to the city’s thriving coal business. We have incredible plans for the Coal Exchange and our goal is to breath life into this utterly stunning building once again.”
The Coal Exchange was built between 1883 and 1886 to the designs of James, Seward and Thomas. It was also the location for the first recorded million pound business deal.
