Worldwide: Data from The BTN Group shows that 85 per cent of corporate travel professionals oppose Donald Trump’s proposal for travellers entering the US to disclose five years of social media history.

Just 2.5 per cent of corporate travel professionals think the US shouldbe permitted to request this information. A further 0.84 per cent agree in principle, but only if applied exclusively to tourists.

If the Trump administration does succeed in bringing the proposal into law:

  • 41.18 per cent of corporates would send fewer travellers to the US
  • 16.81 per cent would rely more on video conferencing
  • 18.49 per cent there would be no impact on their travel programme

Louis Magliaro, EVP of The BTN Group, said “Corporate travellers already navigate complex visa processes, security checks and compliance requirements. Adding mandatory disclosure of personal social media history could add more red tape when travel managers are already under pressure to increase efficiencies, cut costs and improve traveller wellbeing.”

The survey registered 192 respondents divided geographically across the UK (31 per cent), mainland Europe (42 per cent), and the rest of the world (27 per cent). The majority of respondents (60 per cent) were corporate travel buyers, managers and bookers.

Highlights:
  • BTN Group survey shows 85 per cent of corporate travel professionals oppose proposed US requirement for foreign travellers to disclose five years of social media history.
  • Only 2.5 per cent of respondents support allowing the US to request foreign visitors’ social media data, with 0.84 per cent agreeing only for tourists under limited conditions.
  • If implemented, 41.18 per cent of corporates say they would reduce US travel volumes, while 16.81% would increase reliance on video conferencing.
  • The BTN Group survey of 192 respondents across the UK, Europe and other regions highlights concerns over increased travel compliance and administrative burden.
