UK: The new-build 46-unit Supercity York aparthotel is set to open this month, designed by local architects brown + company.
The property is located on Micklegate, near to York city centre.
Supercity signed the project in 2021 with plans to open in 2023. The construction of the aparthotel was delayed when part of York’s original medieval city wall was discovered during building. Archaeological investigations later revealed artefacts dating back to the Roman period.
Inspiration for the property’s design is taken from the city’s medieval history and architecture.
Roger Walters, founder and chairman of Supercity, said the building was carefully designed to fit in with its surroundings. “The original exterior was agreed with the City of York Council after careful deliberation to make the building form blend in with the character of York,” he said. “It has been a pleasure to work with brown + company. They have supported us throughout the construction and planning stages; I highly recommend the practice.”
Walters added that York’s strong tourism market and demand from professionals staying in the city for extended periods made the location an attractive choice for the company. “It’s going to bring in a bit more permanency to the visitors, so people will hang around for a few days rather than come in and out of York,” he said.
When open, the property will provide 12 full-time and four part-time roles and will feature a 24-hour reception and accessible rooms.
