UK: A change of use application has been submitted by Crichton Hotels to transform Crichton House on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh into 18 serviced apartments.

Set within the Old Town Conservation Area, Crichton House was converted to offices around 20 years ago. It formerly used to operate as a brew house.

Plans to transform the offices include minor external alterations to the entrance to improve the existing lobby roof, protective barriers to allow for safe access onto balconies, as well as internal modifications including a new fire escape stair, double glazing, and the addition of new partitions.

Studio LBA said in a statement: “The aim of this project is to restore life to the now redundant Crichton House, which although is not listed, does represent an insight into the local area’s industrial past.

“The proposals seek to preserve the architectural integrity of the envelope, whilst making improvements to all existing windows and doors, which are now failing in some locations and would benefit from replacement. The building is in desperate need of refurbishment and conversion to bring life and economy back to this area, and the proposals seek to allow this.”

In H1 2023, several planning applications have been made in Edinburgh. Aparthotel developments have been submitted by Chris Stewart Group, Iceni Projects and HUBCAP, and Blagden Property, whilst Northumberland Street Properties also seek to convert an office into serviced apartments.
