UK: Plans to convert a “historic town centre building” into a 20-bedroom aparthotel have been granted approval by Westmorland and Furness Council.

The site, located at 113-117 Duke Street in Barrow town centre, is currently vacant.

Plans involve converting the majority of the site into an aparthotel, with part of the ground floor being retained for commercial use.

Each of the 20 rooms will feature a “mini kitchen facility” and an en-suite shower room. The ground floor will offer a reception area, laundry for guest use, and a communal accessible toilet.

No work is proposed to the exterior of the site apart from a repair and redecoration of the windows. A partial demolition of the rear stairs also forms part of the plans.

The application submitted by Craig & Meyer Architects on behalf of St David Copland Ltd read: “The proposal conversion is largely concerned with the removal of much of the modern additions and with the re-arrangement of internal spaces to create attractive, usable and contemporary accommodation. The works have been sensitively designed to minimise impact upon the remaining historic fabric of the building, harmonising new with old.”

Elsewhere in Barrow, St David Group developed the Old Lyric Hall on Clifford Street.

Highlights:
  • Westmorland and Furness Council has approved plans to convert a vacant historic building on Duke Street in Barrow town centre into a 20-bedroom aparthotel.
  • The approved scheme retains part of the ground floor for commercial use while delivering serviced accommodation with en-suite rooms and mini kitchen facilities.
  • Internal reconfiguration will prioritise the removal of later additions, with works designed to preserve and respect the building’s historic fabric.
  • Minimal external alterations are planned, limited to window repairs and redecoration, alongside partial demolition of rear stair structures.
  • The project continues St David Copland Ltd’s investment in Barrow’s regeneration, following its redevelopment of the Old Lyric Hall on Clifford Street.
