UK: Plans for a new £7.5 million aparthotel in Edinburgh have been approved, paving the way for the redevelopment of a former taxi depot site in the city’s Gorgie area.

The building at 93-101 Gorgie Road will be demolished as part of the project, and will be replaced by a 23 unit aparthotel. The development will have a mix of studio apartments, one and two bedroom units and a reception area.

The development will be spread across two blocks and include a central courtyard. Before construction work can start, there are several planning conditions that need to be met, such as landscaping, waste management and transport needs.

The scheme was approved by city planners following a previous proposal last year for 28 serviced apartments, which was rejected. The updated plans have scaled back the development, while also providing hotel-like facilities and services.

David Givan, chief planning officer at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “The principle of aparthotel use at the site is considered acceptable given the site’s brownfield nature, proximity to the Gorgie/Dalry Town Centre, and the good public travel links in the local area.

“The proposed design is considered to be of a good quality, and compatible with the spatial character of the area, creating an attractive and active inner courtyard that utilises a contemporary architectural design to produce a distinctive sense of place within the site.”

The owner of Capital Cars plans to relocate the business elsewhere in Edinburgh as part of the redevelopment.

Highlights:
  • Edinburgh city planners have approved a £7.5 million aparthotel development that will replace the former Capital Cars depot on Gorgie Road.
  • The approved scheme will deliver 23 aparthotel units, including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, alongside a reception area and courtyard.
  • Following the rejection of a larger 28-unit proposal in 2025, the revised development was scaled back and redesigned with hotel-style facilities.
  • The aparthotel project will be spread across two buildings on a brownfield site close to Gorgie/Dalry Town Centre and public transport links.
  • Capital Cars will relocate its operations elsewhere in Edinburgh as the redevelopment moves forward, subject to planning and construction conditions.
