UK: J.B.S.L. Holdings Ltd has submitted an application to change the use of the former Wilko store in Chesterfield into an aparthotel.
Located at 1A Vicar Lane in Chesterfield town centre, the former Wilko store closed in October 2023 after the chain went into administration.
Plans for the vacant site call for a 70-unit aparthotel including a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments. Nine would be located on the ground floor, 21 on the first floor, and 20 on the second and third floor.
Additional work includes a two-storey roof extension on top of the existing building and the creation two new retail units on part of the ground floor.
One of the commercial units is intended for a retail/coffee shop and would be linked to the aparthotel.
A gym and business centre would also be created on the lower and ground floor for exclusive use of aparthotel guests.
Paul Treacy Architects said in the design and access statement: “The proposed mixed-use aparthotel development represents a significant opportunity to contribute positively to the built environment of Chesterfield while meeting the growing demand for accommodation in the area.
“The design focuses on sustainability through energy reduction, sustainable materials selection, and local biodiversity enhancement. Proposed features include a new open atrium with natural light and ventilation, native habitats preservation and enhancement, as well as accessible and navigable barrier-free layouts incorporating communal spaces such as links to a new retail/brand coffee shop/bar, staff facilities, common lounge areas, a gymnasium and secure cycle parking.
“We are confident that this development will significantly contribute to the city’s visitor experience, strengthen local businesses, and bolster the overall vitality and economic prosperity of the area.”
Chesterfield Borough Council is due to make a decision on the application by Friday 21 November 2025.
